The 2.5L MZR is a completely new engine release of the 2.3L MZR, featuring 2488cc (2.5L almost) of displacement, and it will be a DISI (direct injection spark ignition), just like the current 2.3L MZR. According to Mazda EU, the engine has a compression ratio of 9.7:1, and the engine for USA will be nearly identical to the one released in the EU. Mazda also claims a horsepower increase to around 168 hp, and achieve much better MPG than the current Mazda3/6.

thanks, that's great news. any idea though why the c.r. is only 9.7:1? from what i understand d.i. allows a much higher c.r. than that(12:1 or so in normally aspirated engines and even around 10:1 in turbos).

i believe that you're incorrect about the 2.5mzr getting d.i. at least as it is currently available in europe. i visited various mazda european corporate sites and there is no mention of d.i. regarding that or any other of their n.a. engines. indeed it's been rumored that the new 2.5 would get it and perhaps it's still possible that it will happen by the time the next-gen 3 is released.
