Angry Dies in reverse

My car has been running great, battery new in April, with no issues at all until now. I drove it forward a few feet without a problem, but when I put it in reverse to back up it died instantly. It idles fine, but it dies as soon as I put it in gear to reverse.. What could cause this? This is a 2013 Mazda 3 i.

Some cars have a switch that "kills" the engine for a split second when shifting into reverse. That's to keep the car from lurching as it goes from Park to Neutral on the way to Reverse. Could be as simple as adjusting that switch or replacing it.
