Hi all, new to the forum and new to Mazda.

I've got a relatively new 2017 2.0 hatchback. The MPG computer is very "optimistic" in its reading. Over the first 4000 miles, it has consistently reported tank averages of 37-39mpg, but my manual calculations at each fillup show closer to 33 mpg.

I have seen some old threads of how to get into a service menu on the dash where you can calibrate this, but none of the sequences seem to get me into that menu on my car.

Can anyone tell me the sequence to get into the service menu, and then the proper item to change to fix my fuel consumption calculation?

I'm not aware of any Mazda being able to be calibrate the MPG calculator.

 

I found these videos for a Mazda 6, and but the car they show has a key ignition, and my new 3 has the "keyless" pushbutton start, and my attempts to reproduce/modify the process have failed.

 

The 2017 model doesn't use that console still, do they?!

I think 4k should be more then enough so that the turn over has been during your ownership, but still the average MPG is about an average of 2k miles atleast. If your last couple of tanks were lower it will not show up.

 

No, it doesn't use that console, but I was hoping something similar was accessible.

The MPG computer is reset each time the trip "A" odometer is reset per the setting on the center console fuel consumption app. Maybe this is new to the 2017. I reset that trip meter every time I fill my tank, and the MPG computer also resets to 0. My manual calculations, while they may vary by a few MPG against the computer for a given tank, should average out to the same as the car computer over the 12 or so tanks of gas I've put in the car. But, the average of the car computer is about 4-5 MPG higher that actuals.

I have also checked the odometer and speedometer against gps and it is accurate within a tenth of a mile over 50 miles, so this also does not account for the discrepancy.

 

huh, i'll need to see if the same is with the mazda3 16. I kind of enjoy seeing the 37mpg on mine but it recently dropped to 36.8 with my new work location so I am clearly doing worse gas millage (less then half the time on the highway, still its 1/3rd the distance total) and might as well reset it now. -_-

 

I always thought the 3's computer value was very pessimistic, compared to the optimistic value from our VW TDI. Think the difference is that Mazda uses 99 mpg for coasting vs. 200 for VW.

Don't think you can recalibrate it. You can zero out the value at any time by pushing and holding the info button right in the middle, between the up and down sides of it.
