I just bought an '08 M3 and want to utilize the built-in sirius capabilities by installing a siriusconnect tuner. Does anyone know the brand of the stock stereo?

 

The '08 HU should be made by clarion. That being said the only sirius receiver you're going to get to work with it is the mazda one.

 

thanks. that is what I was afraid of. regardless, I'm not too keen on losing primary functions from my Starmate, like artist alerts and the ablity to pause broadcasts. guess I'll just have to use it the old fashioned way.

 

Yeah just keep the starmate. I installed one of those in a friend's 3 and it looked just fine. Here's what I did.

Remove the insert from the ashtray and the starmate will sit in the opening perfectly (no tape/mounting). I ran the power wire behind the ashtray section and plugged it into a 12v DC power outlet tapped off of the wiring to the cigarette lighter, but behind the panel. That way it was easily removable, I didn't hack the starmate's wiring, and I could still use the cigarette lighter to charge a phone or something. I ran the antenna behind the glovebox and then pushed it behind the black weather stripping running along the front of the passenger's door frame to the base of the a-pillar. Removed the a-pillar cover and ran the wiring to the front of the panel and then replaced the cover. Her antenna sits on the front right corner of the dash and she gets great reception. She's just using the built in FM transmitter so no worries about an input.

You could do the same thing in your car, just run the power and signal wires to the input and 12v DC plug in the console. If you remove the cupholder section then you can actually run the wires up over the lip and then replace the cupholders. It will be a little tight at first but it should go on pretty easily. You will need a ground loop isolator for the audio input though or you'll get lots of alternator whine.
