Taken delivery on a 2015 Mazda 3 last week. Two days ago, saw something on the windscreen and upon investigation, a stone chip and spreading crack.
I did not actually say 'Bother!!!' Only driven less than 50 miles and nowhere that a gritting truck was spreading anything, not even on a motorway. Cannot believe that the dealer sold it like that, nor can I believe that I did not see it on the test drive.
So getting a new screen on Thursday. An expensive start.
Thanks. Two images; the crack is about 04:00 position from the driving position. Now I see it, it is very obvious and cannot believe that I would not have noticed during the test drive. Of course, it could have been an unnoticeable chip at that time and as frequently happens, subsequently develops into a crack. The assessment did offer to 'repair' with the provision that it could become a major crack, but from my past experience, there is no cure and it will become a problem later. Additionally, here in the UK, any crack on the drivers side is an automatic MOT failure at the annual test, although as a new owner, that is not due for a year. Nevertheless, only delaying the inevitable.
That is caused from an impact and for various reasons i.e. temperatures road condition weather in general is cause it to spider web or fracture outward as safety glass is design to. There is some thought to using the glass repair kits that may in some cases slow down the effect. I don't use them as i found they seldom work and always seem to create visual distraction more than the glass fracture?
i once had a windshield repaired on my 05 mazda 6 right after picking it up new from the dealer...was damaged during the transfer from another dealer...they tried to fix it and it came out awful...had them replace it...better off replacing...would never recommend windshield repair unless it's in a corner or area that is a non issue just to prevent cracking...insurance in MA covers glass so if i get chips i just put pressure on the windshield until it cracks so i can get it replaced

There is no technically supported such thing as "in a corner or area that is a non issue just to prevent cracking" . Wow.... it really is a strong suggestion you attend a basic engineering school!
You don't help or support as a DIY....
but you are entertaining to say the least for me (and my shop service guys (1 gal) right down to the janitor) almost daily!

if it's a safety hazard, yes i do that...rather not have the sun glinting off of it...if the crack has started it will only get worse...why wait lol

what i was trying to say is i would not recommend repairing a chip/crack unless it's in a corner where it's not an issue with your field of view...if the chip/crack is in your field of view and it's better to replace the windshield for safety...figured you may have been able to decipher that but then i remembered everyone else on this board has to spend a few extra minutes trying to decipher your posts so i guess not

Sorry dude but the more you post the more you get the 1ST prize of a DIY . Your information is not accurate nor technically correct about how safety glass in windshield words. I know that you must be remembering windshield glass pre 1990's?? maybe?
As for field of vision that also does not really work as an explanation either. Glare and relction happen with how light is position relative the drivers position. One of many examples :A perfect new windshield will have extreme glare like at sun rise or sun set.
As for windshield glass generally the specification and how the aero dynamics are on many platforms your windshield get bombarded and micro chips within a short term. You can see this effect by such things as the windshield seems to get dirty quicker and wipers wear much faster. Chip happen every time you drive on a highway even if you don't get behind traffic. And debris can get propelled in the air from a vehcle several hundred yard in from to of you which on a calm wind day will likely impact your windshield. "chip" LOL
Yo also realize that when you do not get an OEM windshield replacement most insurance companies do not pay for OEM . And there are several quality glass in the aftermarket . They may meet the OEM required SAFTY specification but they are still more prone to impact damage then high quality and OEM glass. Many windshield or glass shops, their employees or even owners may not even be aware of this quality differencing in glass and only offer glass they make the most GP(gross profit) from offering and selling.

chips and cracks in the lower portion of the glass (i.e. edges, some of which are blacked out anyway) and in the corners where you don't look won't be as much of an issue as the ones in the middle of the windshield so you can sometimes get by with having those fixed/repaired and they won't be an issue...within your field of vision they can be more of an issue and the repairs never look good so i would replace instead of repair...that's all i was stating

yes this is common knowledge...not sure why it has to be stated

also common knowledge but our kia telluride has windshield cracking issues so much that there is a class action lawsuit so that is not a consistent statement across the board that oem is better than non...so when our windshield (car picked up in September '21) didn't even make it through it's first winter before chipping and spider cracking all the way horizontally and vertically within a day or two i specifically asked for non-oem glass from safelite...and since glass is free here i'm typically not so picky about oem vs non-oem (other than with the kia)...guess that's what you get with a kia though...not my car so not my choice
