that tape on the steering wheel is worth 20 horses........i don't think there's room on the dash for my GPS unit now.....sigh...

what do you think they were trying to hide on the left below the dash (where white tapes were)?

There's report saying mazda achieved 25% weight reduction, which is about 740lbs. This alone can increase the MPG big time if true. There's also report that both 2.0L and 2.5L engines would be direct injection with stop-start. DI is good for torque in usable rpm range (10% increase 0-4000rpm). The 2009 mazda6 has the 2.5, but not DI.
If they achieve that much of a weight reduction- currently the car weighs about 2800 pounds (depending on model, engine, tranny), meaning the reductionwould bring itdown to abit over 2000 pounds-it would be miraculous, especially since they've said the 2010is physically larger. The little Scion Xa with a 1.5 engine weighs 2300 pounds. So this larger car with a 2.0 or 2.5 will weigh less?

I don't see how you could do that without a step such as using carbon fiber or the like, which I doubt they would do since carbon fiber is not used currently due to cost ie. an entire car frameand panelsmade of carbon fiber versus current materials would cost 3-4x as much in raw materials and fabrication. Also, as you say, if there was such a weight reduction, MPG would I think jump a lot, probably15% minimum, andthe stories about MPG for the 2010 are not so far saying that.

I agree that it does look better than the current sedan, but I'm not impressed. The tailights look like somthing they would do with a lincoln. I prefer the blacked out look of the current 3. Chrome is not for lighting. It has the more stretched look rather than the current compact. I'm gonna have to see the HB to get a full view on the whole thing.

That"s 2 more than the new 6 gets w/the same eng/trans too. Of course that is a bigger, heavier car.
I"m glad to have the 2.5L/6-sp as an option, but for God"s sake why don"t they go to a more efficient intake/exhaust VVT system? More useable power and better economy too.

Nope! I"m just not diggin" the way those fog light surrounds stick out at the top. It doesn't seem like aerodynamics was at the top of their list w/that one.
And having headlight that big and that jut up past the hood that far is asking for trouble from sun/UV damage too, as if that"s not all ready a potential problem.
I had some hazing already beginning near the top of mine over a year ago before installing the RockBlockers which actually seem to have helped stop that.
At least they FINALLY took that stupid turn signal repeater off of the fenders and put it where it belongs... on the side mirrors.
I dunno? I'm kinda" luke-warm to this design.
It all seems a bit silly to me...20MPG from a 2.5L/170HP? With the same weight as my car, but thirty few horses and 50 few lb/tq, it ain't goin' anywhere in a hurry.

I'd agree with you Urban....I find that weight reduction of 25% unbelivable. literally. I'd bet it might not increase in weight albeit it gets a bit larger, but not 25%.

They might do 2.5%. I'm not all that thrilled about it. The new 6 looks like a Camry to me and this looks a lot like other cars as well. I also don't like the unnecessary bulges. It's hard to tell but I hope it isn't smiling like one of the other photos.
I want a 3 Speed Sedan with the auto-stick and still get 30 mpg. One more layer of paint too please.
