Default 2008 Mazda 3 TCM Replacement

I have a question, I've been hearing differing things.

I am having to order a new Transmission Control Module (Part #L34T189E1E), and was told by my mechanic that it's plug and play. I was told by the Mazda dealership, it would need to be programmed after it's replaced. Can anyone confirm? Im hoping it doesn't need to be programmed since that'll cost me another $300 or so. But i've seen more often than not that it's just plug and play.

It needs to be programmed to the transmission and to the vehicle.

There are cheaper options of having your old TCM repaired / rebuilt.

There is a guy on ebay who will sell you a rebuilt one flashed to your VIN. You may or may not need to reprogram your keys though. My TCM is part of the ECM so I had to reprogram my keys which kind of sucked.
