Default 2005 Mazda3 upgrades 150k miles

This is my first time posting I am a new first time Mazda owner 2005 Mazda3 with 148000 miles on it.

I'm sure many if not all of these questions have been answered in another thread. I would also appreciate a link to those threads as well.

I'm interested in increasing horsepower and handling for relatively low cost. 1000-3000. I've already added an Injen CAI but I had some questions before I started really adding mods.

My first question is what sort of maintenance should I do the engine at 150k? If I'm going to add power should I get compression test? Does anything need to be replaced? Tubes, wires?

I got the 2005 2.3 if that makes a difference vs the 1.8.

I've already decided on upgrading to HAWK® - High Performance Street Brake Pads and slotted Brembo rotors when the time comes to change them.

I would like to add headers for more power but I have a few concerns.
#1 is it going to make the car sound ricey if I upgrade the headers and leave the exhaust stock?
#2 how do I choose the right headers that work best with current mods and future mods?

I'd appreciate any upgrade recommendations for my make and model. I'm really just getting into modding cars for the first time and I wanna do this right.

Thanks

Headers without the rest is a waste of time and money.
I don't even know if headers are available for that motor, and if you do find one you might get an increase of 5 HP if you freed up the rest of the exhaust! Installing headers without doing the rest is just a waste of time and money.
You don't have enough money for a power adder.
I don't see a computer programmer, but those won't give you much either.
You're best to stick to cat back and suspension.
Larger Sway Bars will improve handling: ClickMe
A lowering suspension kit will also help handling and stiffen up your worn suspension:

Engine maintenance: change the plugs, wires, ignition coils, clean throttle body, change PCV valve, clean EGR valve, Change the 1st O2 sensor as they get lazy with age (before the cat). Flush and fill cooling system, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid.

I just ate up your top end of your budget or more!
