Default 2.3L from a 6 fit a 3?

Ive done quite a bit of searching but have found nothing specific.
I have a 05 M3 with a bad engine, and a 07 M6 that was totaled but a low mileage engine. Both are 2.3L one with Automatic the other with a 5 speed. I am wondering Will the 2.3L engine out of the M6 fit into the M3?

Paste experience with 2.3L motors says it probably will and that the only difference might be the Bell housing on the transmissions, and possibly the exhaust manifolds. As these are both quite close in vintage, thinking possible the ECM in the 3 would work on the 6's components.

Anybody out there done this swap that can have any input?

Thanks,
Mike in Alabama

Same engine; that said, the 2.3 here in the United States has a very high morality rate and I'd recommend not wasting your time and money putting another 2.3 into your car. In your shoes I'd buy the Ford version of the engine called the Duratec; this engine is 2.5 liters, has more power, the same fuel economy, and most importantly, some very important internal upgrades to make the engine quite robust.

Thanks for the input and the suggestion of a performance upgrade. But in this situation its about getting a family member back into a running car with minimal or near zero cost. As we own both the cars the only expense is the time it takes to do the work. I just wanted to make sure that the blocks/mounts/connections were basically all the same on the 2 different year vintages of the same engine size.

If the engine covers are identical and the dipstick is in the same position, then yes it is a easy swap. Use all the manifolds and auxiliaries from the old engine on the replacement engine.
