Default 2.0L auto vs. Manual MPG difference??

I have an 06 Mazda3 with the 2.0L and a manual transmission. This is strictly my "practicle/commuter" vehicle so gas mileage is my #1 concern. I have been extremely happy with the fuel economy with this car. Around 32mpg in town and 36+mpg on highway trips. I'm looking at getting a new car soon and my wife REALLY wants an auto ( I prefer the manual). Anyway, I'm intereted in the mileage people are getting with the 2.0/auto combo. My biggest concern is buying one with an auto and only gettingmid 20swith it. While that is not terrible, I honestly would probably choose a different car to get that mileage. I commute to my cabin every weekend and it is 500 miles round trip, soa solid 30+ mpg is really important to me.

Thanks in advance.

depends. is ur drive all highway or is it rush hour. cuz if its like rush hour stop and go stuff go for the automatic but if its highway go standard. hell (im from canada so i dont know how to translate this into miles) but i got 686KM to the tank because i was driving all highway to a temp job. and with the trip to your cabin.... if its all highway not many stops get the standard. be better on gas easily.

Km x .621370 = miles

miles x 1.609347 = Km

huh???????? What on earth does that have to do with the question I'm asking?

Let me restate the question. I already have a 2.0 manual. I like the car and the mileage is excellent. My wife has not been willing to learn to drive the manual transmision and I really need a car that she can/will drive if need be. What I'm wondering is what kind of mileage are people getting with the 2.0/auto combo. Highway mileage is my primary concern.

You'd probably lose about 2 mpg with the auto vs the stick

According the Mazda's website, the 2008 model year mileage is (2.0 engine):

Manual (city/highway)- 24/32

Auto (city/highway) - 23/31

One point to make is, a manual will give you better mileage versus an auto, if (big if) the driver knows how to properly drive a manual (ie. when to shift, how to not overshift, etc). At least 1/2 the drivers of sticks I have seen do not shift up/down at the proper time with any consistency, and thus their gas mileage is probably worse than it would be if they had an auto.

Easier said than done! It has been almost 2 years now. She actually can drive the car, but I would not say she is proficient at it. She has pretty much told me that she won't do it. To me it seems silly, but sometimes you have to pick your battles.

Ok, there must be someone out there who has a 2.0/auto that can give some actual MPG numbers they have seen?

How about the 2.3Ls, how much less mpg do they typically get. Again, I'm looking for atcual numebers that you have seen. Not EPA eastimates. Thanks

My actual numbers, doing a mix of city/freeway in weekly life, are 27-29 mpg (very, very little true stop and go).

Pure highway, as in set the cruise control and drive, I actually do better than EPA, 34-37 mpgdepending on conditions (wind, how much up and down there is, etc).

I think the gap between manual and auto has shrunk in recent years, the engineering/materialsare better, meaning autos are lighter and the transfer of power more efficient, than in years past.
