I know of ppl who use 18x8's successfully,even w/lowered suspensions but your information is incomplete.
The offset is critical. OEM for the 3 is+52.5mm, anything less than 45 and you could be in trouble. Plusthe tire size selected is also a critical issue.
Spacers wouldonly make the situation worse unless these wheels had a greater off-set, and that is nearly impossible w/an AM wheels.
That said, I know someone w/Roto wheels 17x7.5x+45mm, Eibach Pro-kit (1.2-1.3" drop all-around) and 225/45x17's, the correct plus size tire and had recently scraped his RR tire pretty badly, but he was driving very hard too. He is now planning to roll the rear fenders.
