Is an 07 mazda 3 i tunable?
So I've run into an issue where I've been told that you're unable to tune a 2007 2.0 mazda 3 i on its factory ECU, BUT I found a software called mazdaedit that claims it can be used for first gen 2.0 Mazda 3, and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it, so I dont waste $250 buying this and not being able to do anything with it. I have talked to a shop and a friend's friend about tuning it and they both said they can't, but a friend that's a tuner assures me (despite never having the software) that I can. Please help.
@FrostRPMs, what the "mazdaedit" folks want you to believe is their tiny staff knows more about how to tune an engine than the highly trained and exceedingly experienced Mazda engineers do. That isn't a bet I'd take, what about you?
Long story short, the 2.0 engine in your Mazda3 is so well tuned it yields only 8 fewer horsepower than the 2.3 liter engine also available in the Mazda3 in 2007. So, my advice is, if you really have $250 burning a hole in your pocket and you want to see if a tune will work; sure, knock yourself out. My bet is the results will be immeasurable.

Not for Mazda at the moment
However I flew from the West Cast to Florida attended a School to get trained as a real life certified EFI/ECU Performance Calibrator! lol
Engineers seldom anymore in the last few decades develop the ECU software and operating programs for ECU/PCM/TCM, etc.
In fact there are less and less engineers at auto-manufacture anymore.... at least as we use to know how many there were once .
The things you should ask from any ECU Calibrator are:
Do you Lock my ECU
Can I buy a access program to do my own adjustments.
Are you able to access completely all the cell (may be called several different names) . They may be limited to engine only and not transmission which the code to access them are harder to break on many platforms.
What exactly do I get for the package price they offer.
Most all "toooners" I have come across over the year are hacks and change a few things that you can notice right away thus creating their image of knowing what they are doing.
Any real Calibrator will tell you making changes requires about a minimum of an hour and for track rats can run into several hours of reviewing data logging of ECU cells to watch what is going on at different engines speeds and loads.
What I suggest to all my customers is to first install all the engine upgrades that will run with a stock ECU and then use Calibrating to make all the parts work better. i.e. on a 1.6 Supercharged engine with a reduction pulley, performance camshaft,CAT back exhaust and a ported head will yield an estimated 225 HP without a ECU Calibration but with an ECU calibration almost 240+. Not a Mazda... LOL But I think you get the point.
