Immobilizer activated, no keys... do I just buy new keys and program them?
Hi all-
I just bought a 2012 Mazda2 where the one working key lost the RFID chip (the fob broke and the chip is missing). I know I'm taking a risk but we'll see how deep a hole I'm in.
I have the mechanical part of the key. It works fine in door and in the ignition. Power comes on but won't start.
The immobilizer light flashes quickly for a couple minutes, then shows a three-flash trouble code. As I understand it, that means it isn't getting a code from the key, which makes sense.
I put a code reader on it and got "Theft detected. Immobilizer activated."
I had one locksmith tell me (without checking anything, just from what I describe here) that it will need a new ECU to resolve the issue.
Thoughts on this? I understand it will probably need to go to a dealer, but does a new ECU make sense, or just new keys and having them programmed? I called the nearest dealership and of course all they said was, "Bring it in and we'll look."

You will probably need a new transponder chip / key that will need to be programmed to the ECU.
I bet there are many people that loose all the keys for their car and most insurance companies offer "key cover" for lost or stolen keys.
I can't see that an ECU replacement would be necessary for keys to be reprogrammed. I think you just need a locksmith with the correct hardware and software to perform the procedure, that possibly means a Mazda dealer.
That's just my opinion

Most locksmiths should be able to cut cheaply for you.
Search for how to program the keyless system. It requires a sequence of opening/closing the door / ignition switching.
or this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/312756314828 I believe I read that the trunk button would work, but I haven't tried.
fob emblem is $$$:
