Default Help

My mazda mx5 1.8 2003 broke down, think timing belt or chain broke. Will be engine be damaged? Was told by first mechanic, who I know did not look properly, that the damage would be expensive to repair and engine goosed. I have also read that with a non interuptive engine, this would not be the case.
I was driving, engine management light came on, engine stopped. I didn't hear any clattering of valves etc
Does my car have a non interuptive engine?
Can you help please?
