Default Clutch issues

Evening all, first of all I'm new to the forum and also new to owning a mazda. Ive just been getting a 2009 mazda 2 for the mrs and have a couple of questions people might be able to answer.
The first main one is the clutch, it's fine if your gentle changing gears but if you go to push the accelerator while changing it just slips until you release the accelerator. I'm thinking the clutch is goosed but does anyone else have any other cheaper ideas? If it is the clutch, is it a DIY job or garage?
Any rough prices too for a garage to do the job?

Try driving off in a high gear like 4th, does the clutch slip then and let you drive away or do you stall? A clutch in good condition should cause the car to stall or at least the engine will labour and struggle under the load. A slipping clutch saves the engine from load so will just slip as you drive off. Rough and ready diagnostic but might help give an idea of the state of the clutch.

I reckon a clutch, if its just worn out and not needing other repair, on these will be in the region of £300-400, but sky is the limit depending on who you go to...dealers sometimes have fixed prices for these things.

Another bush mechanic type thing to do is stall the car in gear, then see if the problem improves. THis might be an old fashioned idea, but in simpler times doing this could reset sticking parts and fix intermittent slippage. But if its a worn friction plate, this obviously won't work. Can't hurt to try it and I'm of the opinion that any information you can give garages about behaviour of the car can help... good luck
