Is auto box trouble free
WRT "MAZDA2 FN4A-EL AUTO reliability"
Its a standard 4Sp Auto with a LockUp Torque Converter, NOT a CVT & that is a VERY Good thing.
They came with FULL SYNTHETIC ATF from the FACTORY & that is a VERY Good thing.
Per my post:

If the MAZDA2 FN4A-EL AUTO has been serviced properly it will help longevity.
“…….
MAZDA2 FN4A-EL:
4Sp electronically controlled automatic transaxle with Lockup Torque Converter developed by MAZDA & Ford.
“MAZDA2 FN4A-EL uses "MAZDA M5 fluid [MAZDA MV]", the MAZDA Factory Fill Fluid was reportedly made by Idemitsu Kosan & was FULL SYNTHETIC. Mazda vehicles have "M V" embossed on the dipstick handle.
MAZDA2 FN4A-EL Maximum input torque after torque converter: 270 Lb-ft (365 N-m)
MAZDA2 ZY-VE 1.5lt = 76 kilowatts of power & 137 NM of torque
SO…hopefully the Mazda 2 1.5lt N/A does not produce enough torque to Overly Stress the FN4A-EL Auto Transmission & it will have a long trouble free life, provided ATF Fluid & Filter are changed & "MAZDA M5 fluid [MAZDA MV]" is used. ......“
If the MAZDA2 FN4A-EL Auto :
a) has not been abused
b) shifts smoothly at both Cold Start Fast Idle, Full Op Temp Hot Idle etc for the following: “Park to D”, “D to N to R” & "Back again",
c) “shifts back to first smoothly going up a steep hill when slowing to a crawl”,
d) “reverses smoothly up a steep hill from stopped”,
e) "the Lockup Torque Converter engages & disengages without Shudder on gentle acceleration up a long slow incline",
f) "It kicks down smoothly on acceleration"
g) "It Upshifts smoothly at say 4500RPM when using the L to 2nd to D Manual Up shift positions",
h) "it smoothy down shifts for engine Braking",
i) "The Hold Button Mode Functions as described in the Owners Manual"
j) etc WRT Functional Tests
k) does not presently "Whine like a Banshee"
l) NO OBD2 Codes or Pending Codes for the Automatic Transmission
l) has had a drain & fill with MAZDA MV FULL SYNTHETIC FLUID at nominal 100,000km
m) has had the MAZDA MV FULL SYNTHETIC FLUID changed before 160,000km with fluid down the Filler Tube until it runs clean out the Radiator Return, the pan Dropped & Synthetic Felt Media Cartridge changed.
=>> You can do much of the above functional testing yourself in a "Suitable Test Drive".
The one thing I have noticed on the MAZDA 2’s 2007 to 2014 DE ie 1.5lt’s with FN4A-EL AUTO’s I drove with 80,000km to 360,000km before I bought mine…….is when started from cold & after sitting over night the first upshift from 1st to 2nd can be a bit harsh if the fluid is aged, mine was like this to. Fresh MAZDA MV FULL SYNTHETIC FLUID down the filler tube until it runs clean out the return line from the bottom of radiator & a New Synthetic Felt Cartridge Filter sorted mine & also a number of other MAZDA 2’s I’ve serviced.
At the end of it it is so VERY IMPORTANT to know what you are doing if you are looking at Purchasing a Secondhand Car at nominal 10-15Yrs Old with say 160,000kms & no WARRANTY. ......else make sure you GET AN EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONAL to assess the vehicle & provide a WRITTEN INSPECTION REPORT.
Hope the above helps.
.....Good luck.
