Default 2015 Mazda 2 rear seatbelts locked out

Hi guys,

not sure if this is a question that’s been asked before or not, I couldn’t find anywhere that it might have been. The rear seatbelt on the drivers side in my Mazda 2 is fully all the way out and won’t retract. The left rear seatbelt behind the passenger is locked or jammed and won’t retract any further or go back in. I’m assuming that both need to be replaced.. just wondering the best way to access the seatbelt anchor points to pull out the old units and reinstall a new one?

any help would be greatly appreciated as well as any other suggestions of what the issue might be.

thanks in advance

Common problem, unfortunately.

I would hit up Mazda Australia direct, cry poor, cry brand loyalty. . Its a well known defect.

thank you! I emailed Mazda this morning and did cry all those things haha. The worst bit is I only bought the car a couple of days ago from a dealer. Turns out theyd rolled the belts in behind the trim so I didn’t know until I went to put people in the back. I’ve contacted the dealer but needless to say they aren’t willing to help

Every used car sold by a car dealer comes with Stat warranty. They can't deny the fault. Threaten them with the ACCC, FairTrade NSW, MTA NSW.

Hi, just wonder if your email works? Has Mazda replied to you? I got the same issue actually, the dealer said it would cost around $600 to replace it!!!

Hi Queenie, I was actually quoted around $1500 including labour to replace both. I had mine assessed by my local Mazda dealer who sent away a repair claim to Mazda Australia and they replaced them free of charge. The car hadn’t even done 50000km and there is a known fault with the original seatbelts for this model car. If you have no luck with the dealer I’d speak with Mazda Australia. The dealer waived the inspection/assessment fee as well and just took some photos and details of the car and sent it through as an out of warranty claim
