2003 Mazda 2 with Jerky Transmission
Hi everyone.
I have a 2003 Mazda 2 with an automatic transmission and roughly 111,000 KM on the clock. Frequently when the car is changing from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd, it will jerk and then continue driving as normal. It's especially noticable driving up hills or when giving a moderate amount of throttle. If I am very light with the throttle then it will usually change gear without jerking. Transition from 3rd to 4th and down shifting is always smooth. I've also got no issues with the engine reaching high RPMs (i.e. the car staying in a low gear for longer than it should).
I recently changed the transmission oil and filter and that hasn't helped.
Is this kind of problem normal with a Mazda 2 of this age? Could anyone give me some information about what is going on? I'm wondering whether my transmission is randomly going to fail on my way to work.
Thanks in advanced.

Just stumbled across your post while searching about my car.
I am having a very similar issue with my 2002 DY Demio 1.5L
Although I am only having the same issue with going into the final gear , Which I believe is 4th.
I also worked out the same work around of leaving a very little amount of gas while changing into 4th.
I have taken my demio/2 to an auto trans shop where they completed a scan with no errors showing
They inform me that the auto trans itself has no issue, they believe it is a TCU problem although no codes are shown. They also completed a fluid service with no resolution.
Online I can find very little information to where the TCU is located on this car, even the shop told me they believe it is incorporated into the ECU housing.
So I think I might change the ECU, My current ECU is showing ZY06 100140-6631. Online I could Locate a ZY06 - 100140-6632 which I am very temped to bite the bullet and trust this would be compatible with my car. I am trying to find more information about it.
If I get this ECU and it fixes my issues I will let you know.
its been a while since this post, I wonder if you have had any luck

I've kinda developed this extra sense/intuition to anticipate when the car is about to change gear and jerk, and how much or little throttle I need to minimise the amount of jerking.
I asked a mechanic about it a couple of years ago and he thought the transmission would have to be rebuilt to fix it, but it's not worth it in such an old car. As long as it's not getting worse, I don't think it's worth fixing.
I'm still going to keep driving my car until it dies, I think I can get it to at least 200,000km (currently around 153,000km).
Good luck with yours! Keep me updated.
