Default turn signal/trailer

I have a 2004 tribute. When I tow a tailer my turn signals stop working, one at a time. Sometimes only one stops working and the other is fine. After a while they start working again with no intervention. I was told I needed a heavy duty flasher and that it was the same as the ford flashers. I tried to find the flasher under the dash. My procedure for this with past vehicals was to turn on the blinker stick my head under the dash and listen. When I hear the flasher I can be sure I have the right one by touching it and feeling the switch inside opening and closing. Well not this time, yes i heard the flashing, but it wasn't until I had half the dashboard taken apart that I found it. It was a little relay or diode or something right behind the speedometer. It was an intergal part of a currcuit board and looked nothing like the 'heavy duty flasher' the ford dealer had provided me. Now what?
