Default Radio will not power off

I have what sounds like a strange problem. I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute with the in dash 6CD\Radio. The radio is supposed to power on and off by pushing the volume button. Here's the problem. I can't power the radio off. I press the volume button and it goes in and out like it should, but nothinghappens. Volume works fine. The other button for bass, treble, etc work fine as well. It seems like whatever contacts are in the button aren't working. I took it to the dealer and they said they would have to replace the wholeradio, which is over $500. Anyone have any thoughts? Is there a way to fix this without buying a new radio? I know, I know, I should just be happy that the thing is stuck on instead of off...

Thanks.

Pull the power button off rh3800 and see if it will work normally by pushing on the power/volume stalk instead. Had an 05 the did this but would not turn on instead and a broken radio **** was the problem, not allowing the stalk to be pushed in far enough to actuate the power button part.

Thanks for the tip. One more question. Does the **** just pull straight off?I was yanking on it with my fingers but it doesn't want to budge. I was going to try a plyers but just wanted to check that there wasn't some set screw or something I needed to loosen first. I don't see anything, but it hard to believe I can't just pull it off. I wanted to check before I give it another try. Thanks!

This is OE radio yes? If so then no set screws at all. 01 in my stall right now and both ***** pulling off with slight resistance using only thumb and forefinger.
How difficult is it topull off the audio cont **** on other side? Problem with the one I had was that the **** had broken where it would be pushed onto the stalk and was done poorly. Maybe the know has been glued and placed on the stalk before glue dried??
