Question about O2 sensors.

Question about O2 sensors.
I have a 2001 Mazda Tribute LX V6 3.0L.
Is bank 1 sensor 2 considered upstream or downstream or are they interchangeable on this model?
I'm trying to order the correct part.
Thanks in advance.

AFAIK (and on my 2001 V6), there are only upstream (ie pre-catalyst), O2 sensors fitted, so the O2 are used to trim the fuel injection but cannot tell the car how well (or not) the cats are working...the sensors are in the top of the manifolds where the 3 header pipes join, above the cat bulge in the downpipes.

There should be 2 x A/F( air / fuel ) sensors ( pre cat ) & 2 x 02 (oxygen ) sensors (post cat ) in the exhaust of the V6. ------ Cat = catalytic convertor.
Bank 1 sensor 1 is the front bank A/F sensor
Bank 1 sensor 2 is the front bank post-cat O2 sensor
Bank 2 sensor 1 is the rear bank bank A/F sensor
Bank 2 sensor 2 is the rear bank post cat O2 sensor
Bank 1 sensor 1 is the front bank A/F sensor
Bank 1 sensor 2 is the front bank post-cat O2 sensor
Bank 2 sensor 1 is the rear bank bank A/F sensor
Bank 2 sensor 2 is the rear bank post cat O2 sensor

If you look under the front of the engine where the front manifold pipe goes horizontally towards the right wherl, if you have the after-cat sensors one will be there.
Our 2001 and 2002 V6’s dont have them but if yours does the “sensor 2” or downstream sensor will be there. Those between the cylinders and cat are upstream, those after the cat are downstream, think fishing from a bridge (the cat), upstream and downstream would be as you refer to the direction from the bridge.
