Default K&N Air Filter

So i am looking at a K&N Air filter but i have heard good and bad about them. Some swear by them while others say that they increase fuel consumption alot. Anybody have some tips, points or 2 cents?

I've used them on many vehicles, they flow very well. I think the increased fuel consumption is from a heavy foot, especially if you go from a closed box/flat filter to a bullet type filter. You get a ton of induction noise with the bullet types. (Sounds better when the throttle is floored.)

I have one on my wifes 03 and you can't beat them. The gas miles are the same.

i just put a k&n in 05 tribute,as well as new tires.got rid of the NOISY continental contitracs, and put on michelin LTX which ride great and are quiet. But now ,my mileage has dropped off from a steady 20mpg to about 14-15mpg.I was wondering if it was the new tires or the air filter.i'm gonna go get a fram, put it in and see what happens.if the mileage improves back to 20mpg,forget the $50 K&N because i dont see any performance improvement in my MAZDARATTI !!

has anyone else noticed the mpg dropoff after installing the K&N air filter? i switched it out yesterday, back to a fram so i'll clock the mileage closely. i had new plugs and coils put in 2 weeks ago and discussed this with service but they said if it was module or other stuff i wouldve got a check engine light.again no dropoff in performance, passing ability,no rough ride or startup so i'm curious about it.especially after 4 yrs of 20mpg !!I got a 2002 escape, and 2008 escape and all 3 have the 3.0 v-6,so i would notice if they run funny/different.the 2008 has the trip computer and that's getting 23mpg!!
