Mazda makes an i-pod adapter that should plug right into the back of existing audio unit and I believe uses the CD player control to operate. Says it will work with i-pod with a 30 pin dock connector whatever that is.. OE part number is C236-79-CFZ. with retail of $149

I believe is a dealerships online parts web site. The number you gave me they show being for the Protege, the number they show for the trib is TRIB1027. Does that look like a good Mazda number to you? If it is I will call a couple dealer ships in my area and see what I can get it for. Being I work for a repair facility I should be able to get it below retail.

 

It is in fact a dealership online parts store from Rosenthal Mazda. That is not a valid part number. Not sure why that is coming up like that. The adapter (C236-79-CFZ) is the same used on virtually every newer Mazda product. Links below to other model applications at same site.
