Default FWD vs. AWD Transmissions

Hi,

I'm looking to confirm which transmission is in the 2001 3.0L V6 AWD Tribute? I'm new to these cars, and the information I've read thus far suggest a CD4E transmission. However, all information on the CD4E transmission suggests it's for FWD application, so I'm confused as to how it would work in the AWD Tribute. Does the AWD use a modified CD4E transaxle with a transfer case?

I may be required to remove and rebuild the transmission in the coming couple of weeks, so would like to understand exactly what I'll be working with. If you can recommend a comprehensive workshop/transmission manual for this application I'd be appreciative as well!

Thanks!

CD4E is a automatic transmission.

My Factory workshop manual shows it as a AWD.

Thanks for your input grim_reaper, much appreciated.

To clarify, that's the Mazda workshop manual? I may well try and source one of them as a starting point. Provided the AWD automatic transmission used is indeed a CD4E I should be relatively ok, as there is plenty of information available for this transmission and rebuild kits are still available.

The CD4E has its own Wiki page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_CD4E_transmission

There is an application list covering both FWD and AWD vehicles. Haynes do a workshop manual for the Tribute but I'm not sure how much detail they go into on transmission internals or rebuild procedures.
