Is the alarm a continuous or intermittent sound? Either way you can start by squirting a good dose of contact cleaner into the ignition switch, and, preferably using the spare key, insert/ remove/ rotate the key to work out any muck which may be causing the contact tumblers to "hang up".
A continuous sound is often associated with corrosion of the exterior lamp sockets, making the system think lights have been left on. Contact cleaner is good for dealing with this too.

 

Check if your key will slip out of the ignition switch while in either "ON" position. It is possible that the locking in the ignition switch is n/g.
