Default check fuel cap

OK, 2003 Tribute here. The console light "Check Fuel Cap" went on. I checked it, cleaned it, lubed it a bit, and the light stayed on. Two days later, after several drives, I was about to go get my codes checked to figure it out, and it finally went off! Now, the manual says that after tightening the fuel cap "The indicator should turn off after three drive cycles with the fuel cap properly installed." That's exactly what it did. Duh? Why does it take three driving cycles for the car to realize that the fuel cap is tight? When I get gas, and depressurize the tank, the light doesn't go on when I drive away, and turn off after three driving cycles. Anyone understand what these "three driving cycles" are all about?

OK, I think the answer is that the Tribute control system *specifically* wants to see three separate sensor reads that correspond to "OK" before it will turn off that light. Not sure what "drive cycles" means. But I'm guessing that if you just start up and turn off the car three times, that'll do it.

Hi, I've had this happen twice. The mechanic reset the indicator light but it seems to come back on. He said it would take up to 9 drive cycles for it to reset again. Not sure if it will reset unless I clean/lube it. What was your procedure for this? Did you just clean the o-ring section? What lubrication did you apply? The o-ring seems pretty solid, but not sure if I need to buy a new one. Thanks for the tips.
