Default 2008 Tribute I4 2.3L Engines

What is the difference between a L3VE and a LVDE engine? My daughter has an '08 Tribute 2.3L Automatic front wheel drive. I'm 99% sure the engine is toast. When searching JDM suppliers I find reference to a L3VE and an L3DE for what looks to be this application. What's the difference? Are they interchangeable? (I'm one of those people that if there is a difference that makes them not interchangeable I'm sure to end up with the wrong replacement?
Thanks.

L3DE is non variable valve timing

L3VE has variable valve timing, and is usually a newer engine.

Thanks. That helps a some. I would think that the ECM would prevent interchanging them? Do you know an easy way to tell which motor is in her car? e.g. valve cover markings, outside appearance of the motor, etc. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks again.

My my deepest darkest memories/nightmares, If its the L3VE it should have " Variable Valve Timing" on the valve cover. & the L3DE should have either "DOHC" or " Double Overhead Cam"

Another thought, L3DE should have spark plugs wires, and L3VE should have individual ignition coils.
