Default 2002 Mazda Tribute surging while brakes are pressed

Hi, new member who picked up a 2002 tribute with 167,000 miles on it. It's a daily driver meant to just be a second car for area trips. Last week I started having an issue where when I approach and stop at a red light only for the truck to 'surge' like it wants to go and makes an odd sort of 'gasping' or 'revving' noise. ( I dont know how to describe it exactly). No check engine light, no codes, no loss in acceleration or high RPMs. When put into park it occasionally does the surging but very seldom.

I'm a complete novice in this regard and I've dug through different forums and threads but can't seem to find any that are similar to this. Any ideas? Just trying to narrow down what needs to be done repair wise.

Both sound like a possible sticking Idle Air Control (IAC), valve. Not too bad to remove/clean/replace - probably a Youtube video on it somewhere

Could be a leaking brake booster(vacuum). Something to check out.

Thank you guys for the tips. I'm going to pass it along to the mechanic and update the thread if it's resolved or not.

So far I replaced the valve and it's still having the same issue. I'm going to investigate the Brake booster next.

little update but I replaced the upper and lower manifold gaskets and I still have the issue.

Looking into taking it to the shop and see if they can explore it.

Update: im sorry that i didnt update in a timely manner.

the issue was a power steering switch that needed to be replaced. That stoppes the surging while the brake was pressed.

Sounds far-fetched - there are no switches on the 2002 power steering that I am aware of and no connection to anything that would make it surge.

What work did they bill you for?
