Default 2.3 Questions

My daughter just purchased a 2006 Tribute with a 2.3 in it. Seems to be in good mechanical condition. The guy that sold it said he had put a new motor in it. The oil dipstick is run through the tube into the block, but there is also a hole in the valve cover for a dipstick. I plugged it to keep oil from spraying out. Also, there is the solenoid for the VVT actuator, but I cannot find the wire it should be attached to. My question is. What or where are the markings on the motor to identify what the motor is and is it possible he used an older block, that has the oil dipstick tube through the block and attached a new style head with the oil dipstick run through it? I have attached a pic of the engine. I do have a new dipstick on its way.

It looks like they have mixed pieces from a pre-facelift and facelift motor together.

Rocker cover looks facelift, dipstick location looks pre-facelift.
