Default wont start

I just bought a 97 protege 3 weeks ago. it has a lot of upgrades but the dealer boutght it from a repo auction so he didn't even know most the specifics. It has a 1.8 liter stroked to a 1.9. the other day on my way home the car lost power and died when I pulled over. It turns but wont start. Ive been told that it may be a fuel pump? would that most likely be the problem? If so what kind of fuel pump would be recommended for a 1.9 liter turbo. It gets about 14 mpg right now so I'm sure theres an aftermarket one in right now but I don't know what kind.

When you turn the key to the on posistion(not starting though) can you hear the fuel pump kick on? Also could just be a fuel pump relay gone bad, a much cheaper fix. Usually located under the dash somewhere.

Get a compression test on the cylinders done. With the engine work that was done and no history, I would suspect a bad cylinder. Rule out the big stuff in this case.

The car started up this morning after sitting for a couple of days. It ran for about five minutes before dying and not wanting to start again. I do hear the fuel pump turning on. Thanks for the replies so far.
