Cool what can i do to make it perform better?

Well i just purchased a 2001 Mazda Protege 1.6L and the power is just not there i have a spectre cold air intake with the MAF sensor issue that acts up sometimes, NGK iridium IX, general all around maintainence, cleaning and greasing of all electric parts, and a thrush welded muffler on a exhaust system with abou 14 inches of piping. What else can i do to this car without it being turbo'd to get added performance i can get a supercharger although im still a lil if'y on how to do it i was thinking a chip although idk thanks for any help.

hey iv got the same motor but im going to swap it out in bout a year but anyways what i have is the obx 4-1 header it works really well and is one of the top brands, and for the intake iv got the weapon r intake witch is a nother top brand and works GOOD and will not give u any problems, and iv got the corksport powerseries exhaust SOUNDS GOOD AND WORKS GOOD and somthing eles u could do is if u dont use ur ac u could take it off and that will be less wight and it will give u alittle more hp and u could do the same for the power stering but it mite be hard to turn at slow speeds, here is links

you really aren't going to get any noticeable performance gain on a NA motor without using some sort of forced induction whether it is turbo, SC, or nitrous. You may be able to try higher compression pistons and forged rods and maybe cams with higher octance fuel and a piggyback tuner like Split Second for a noticeable gain. But if you are going to do that, you might as well rebuild and boost it with a GT28RS or bigger and all the other goodies to bring it all together. Bolt on mods on a NA motor will bring an increase but it will not be much and you won't notice it really. Also, I just realized you have a 1.6L, try swapping in a 2.0L and do the things above. I don't know what your goals powerwise. You may be happy with a 2.0L with bolt ons. But for real power, boost it. I guarantee bolt ons and about 8-10 psi of boost on a 2.0L will definitely make you happy. You will be surprised.

By the way, post your questions on www.mazdas247.com for more responses and help.

yea your right but maybe hes not a tuner, tuner u know.
but if he just wants a little more power on the 1.6l go will bolt ons of boost see i have a 1.6l with a bolt ons a heat wrap, and also took of my ac and i think its still fast but im still going to swap to 2.0l. he could swap it out to a 1.8l too its a little more easyer swap but its up to him.

yeah, I forgot about the 1.8l. Either way, it's better to start with a bigger displacement engine. Hopefully he chimes in soon so we can get a better idea for how much power he is actually looking for. I agree with you on the corksport exhaust though, I love mine and will be swapping it out soon for the 80mm and selling my 60mm corksport exhaust. Hey, did you ever sell the DG lip?
