Default Water pump

Im getting ready to change the water pump in my girlfriends 93 protege LX with a 1.8 DOHC and a 5 speed. Along with the pump Im going to do the timing belt and related parts. What is the timeframe I will be looking at for this job (I am VERY experianced withstreet rods, muscle cars, andvintage drag cars but not so much on imports)and what will I have to do, or is it pretty streight forward.
Anyone have one of those diagram thumbnail pics?
Thanks, J.R.

Give yourself 2-3 hours total time to replace if you have some good prior auto repair experience and doing job in a driveway. Couple of thumbnails below of water pump and t-belt to give you an idea. If you have not already purchased parts there are some decent deals for OE parts online at www.onlinemazdaparts.com . Use the search by factory part number for parts you will need. Mazda has made available a value line timing belt kit which you might find helpful. Pic a very bottom is of the kit. It comes with the t-belt, idler bearing, tensioner bearing and most helpful of all, an instruction sheet for installing. Separately these parts would retail for over $204 but can get online for $103.92. Would be a good idea to be able to replace both of those bearings as they are over 13 years old and am sure grease is long since dried up inside. Here are some part numbers that might help out.

Value line t-belt kit...b6s0-12-207mv
Value line water pump...b660-15-010r-me
Pump inlet gasket...b6bf-15-116
Pump outlet gasket...b366-15-165
Inlet pipe 'O' ring...e301-15-287
Front crankshaft oil seal...b3c7-10-602a
Front camshaft oil seals...fs01-10-602a...Will need two of course since is DOHC.

Good trick for getting t-belt alignment on first time is to check initially, then use paint marker or nail polish to mark relationship of belt to all three pulleys then transfer marks to new belt. Saves tons of time and ensures new belt will be timed correctly.

Default RE: Water pump

I found this guy on ebay that sells the whole kit for changing a waterpump.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...657&rd=1,1

Would this be the kit for me? He states in the auction that it will fit
MAZDA:
MIATA, MX-5
1994-2000
1.8 LiterDOHC
PROTEGE:
1995-1998
1.8 LiterDOHC
But my girlfriends car is a 93 protege LX, Were all the 1.8 DOHC the same? I haven't ordered a kit from him yet but it seems like a good deal consitering that Shucks online (partsamerica.com) quoted me about 200 bucks for all the stuff that is listed in this kit (Still beats the 700 we were quoted to have it fixed).
Thanks for all the help!!! This is the most work I have done on a car older than 1976.

Looks like parts are all the same with the exception of the water pump. Pump for later model has an additional flange for alternator bracket to bolt onto and there is no longer a threaded hole in the pump for the t-belt tensioner bolt. On 93 model pump there is a threaded hole for the t-belt tensioner bolt and on 95 and later it is just a hole and the bolt would then be longer and bolt would pass thru the pump and thread into the front of the block. Unknown if you could just get the longer bolt for later model as I do not know if there is a threaded hole in the front of the block on earlier Protege.

Now that looks like the right water pump

Notice that you are not getting front camshaft and front crankshaft oil seals in this kit. Would be a nice thing to have and replace since you will be in there and older Mazda's are a bit prone to having leaky seals, especially the camshaft seals.
Good luck with the job this weekend and hope the knee surgery goes well. Twoweeks in bed and I wouldbe going stir crazy.
