Default UPDATE: Deep Cycle Battery Install

This is an update to the write-up I originally posted on 3/12/2008. Since the original post, I've installed corner brackets, bonded to the battery tray with J-B WELD epoxy, at each corner of the battery. I left a very small clearance so the battery can be removed easily. See pictures below. The installation is complete and the battery is now held in place very securely. Everything is great, no issues.

I'm glad I installed a Group Size 24 marine deep cycle/starting battery, rather than a Group Size 35 starting battery, which is the size and type specified for my 2003 Protege. I do not necessarily recommend that others do this, as it requires modifications to install the larger battery securely in the engine compartment, with adequate clearance between the top of the battery and the hood. It is also important to insulate or cover the positive wing nut terminal to prevent accidental shorting or mild electric shock. Finally, the polarity of the right and left terminals of a Group Size 24 battery is opposite of that of a Group Size 35 battery, requiring the new battery to be installed facing the opposite direction of the original battery.
