Exclamation Turn Signals Not Working Intermittently

I've got a Mazda Protege '98 that is having an issue with its turn signals. They stop working intermittently and I'm not sure what the cause is. Sometimes they work when I first start up the car, but then they cut out before I've driven even half a block. Sometimes it seems like they go out when I have a change of incline, specifically when I start driving uphill. I don't know if that's something important to note or not. I've checked the turn signal fuse and it's still good. I've replaced the flasher unit (as suggested by a mechanic friend) and that didn't change anything. When the turn signals cut out, there is no blinking or clicking at all. The hazard lights still work though, which is strange as it seems others with similar issues have had both signals and hazards go out. One guy suggested possibly a bad combination switch? I'm not a mechanic and I'm feeling a bit outside of my ability. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
