Default Replacing axle question

Hi,
I have to replace the drivers side axle because the CV joint is bad and the boot is torn and has been for a while. I read it is easier to just replace the whole axle so there is where I am at. Where is the best place to purchase the replacement axle and is this difficult? I have a chilton manual but it does not cover this. As long as I know what I need to do to replace it I can do it. How is the axle held in place to the transmission? I know a nut holds it to the wheel, just not sure for the other end. Thanks for any help.

Scott

Might be helpful if you give us the year, make, and model of your vehicle. Also, whether it is automatic or manual.

I guess that would help...silly me. It is a 96 Protege without ABS, automatic and the 1.5 engine.
