Power Steering Pump
I did one a few years ago. I don't recall the particulars, but I don't think it was very difficult, and not more than a couple of hours of work. Seems to me that is was a good bit easier than replacing the alternator, which I did several months ago. The alternator was a royal PITA.
Because I couldn't find it anywhere else locally in the time frame I had, I bought it at just about the last place I would by a serious car part - O'Reilly. At least it had a lifetime warranty. With parts like that, I normally only buy from an OEM dealer, or NAPA or RockAuto, in that order, with NAPA and RockAuto in a tie.
I ended up getting the pump at Advance on-line. With the 25% discount that popped up it came in at about $85 with tax. Core was $30 and the local place dealt with that no problem. As for the replacement itself...
The removal order in the shop manual (page N-37) was followed. To save others some time I would add the following notes:
1. Bolt (loosen)
2. Nut (loosen)
3. Nut (loosen)
4. Adjusting bolt (loosen)
5. Drive belt (remove)
6. Pressure hose (remove)
7. Return hose (remove)
8. Bolts (3x, remove all)
9. Pump (remove entire assembly)
Mounting bracket, adjusting bracket, pump, etc all can be removed as a single unit. Reinstalling as a single unit makes life a lot easier. At first this wasn't clear to me and I was trying to install the adjusting bracket in place. Pulled the pump in and out 2-3 times before it all dawned on me. Before reinstalling the return hose I used a small funnel to fill the pump with fluid. Once topped off I rotated the pump pulley a few times and was able to top off again. Did this 3-4 times. I also replaced all the fluid in the reservoir but did not flush the system. With the return hose re-installed and the reservoir full with new fluid I started the car for about 5 seconds. Topped off the reservoir and ran the car for about 5 more seconds. No more topping off necessary.
Note on the new part from Advance. The replacement O-ring set it came with were all the wrong sizes. I went to a place in town and purchased O-rings for under $2.00.
