Default Power Steering Gear and Toe-In

I have a Mazda 2000 protege.
My vehicle is leaking power steering fluid.
I took it to the dealer today and they said they
will have to replace the power steering gear.
They also said I need a toe-in.
What is a toe-in?
Is this correct or are they trying to make some money
off of me.
Please advise.
Thanks

Default RE: Power Steering Gear and Toe-In

When they say steering gear, I presume they mean the rack and pinion steering assembly. It is possibly leaking from one of the ends where the inner tie rod is. The tie rod is what connects the steering gear to the wheel to turn it. Toe in refers to the wheel alignment. Toe in means that the front of the front wheels are closer than the rear of the wheels. The easiest way to compare is: while standing up, look at your feet and put your toes together without moving your heels, that is toed in. Now move your toes farther apart without moving your heels, that is toed out. If you need your steering gear replaced, the alignment will need to be set anyway.
