Default New compressor-Now engine surges

had my AC system evacuated, and removed and replaced my compressor. Vacuumed the system, and refilled with new refrigerant. Now, when in Drive, I hear a popping sound (from the reciever/dryer?..drivers side, small canister) and thats when the car surges.

The popping sound reminds me of a solenoid, sounds just like the 'champagne cork' sound one can make with their finger in their mouth, and is coincident (I think) with the compressor clutch engaging.

I think I overfilled my system, 2.5 cans of R-134 instead of 2??? (I had put the correct amount of oil in the compressor directly at installation)

Doesnt happen in P or N and obviously not when the AC is off....

Get that sorted out quick; that's the refrigerant pressure switch running the show. The refrigerant dose is critical. You need to at least measure the engine off equalized static pressure and then run the system at 2000rpm with A/C on, air control on recirc. and fan at position 4 until the cold side temp. is stable. Then shut down the engine, wait a few minutes and recheck the low side pressure. From where you are right now you have two choices, do it by the numbers or put aside enough money to replace some very pricey A/C hardware.

thanks oldeng-

I will take the car in and have it evacuated again and start over. However, I dont have a refigerant pressure/temp table to refer to: Is there one online, or a good publication I can use for reference?

Also, if my system is evacuated, i will need to add oil to the compressor: How does one measure the amount required, or do I just assume its been evacuated completely?

Thanks,

Matt

Pulling vacuum on an A/C system does not remove oil. Water boils at room temp in a vacuum so only water vapor is pulled from the system.

According to my 2000 Protege LX shop manual, the directions are:
1. Do not remove oil from compressor.
2. When replacing cooling unit, add 30 ml. of atmos. GU-10.
