Default Mazda Familia (JDM) AT fault

Hello from New Zealand

I have a 1998 mazda familia BJ5W (JDM model) that has an auto trans fault. I am unable to pull transmission codes from the 17 pin diagnostic plug as the TAT and FAT pins are non existant in my diagnostic plug? (No problem getting engine codes from it)

Fault: first gear not working. Takes off in second gear. Changes to 3rd gear, and then if you slow down enough for it to try select first gear again, the hold light begins to flash and it loses overdrive (limp mode)

Being a qualified mechanic I suspect first/second shift solenoid is stuffed. But id really like to see a fault code for it or numerous other experiences before going into the effort of pulling it apart

Whereabouts in NZ are you? If you're in Auckland I would recommend Auckland Automatics in Onehunga. I'm not sure what generic testers will access trans codes.
You may need to visit Mazda for them to hook up the old FORD ROTUNDA NGS Super STAR II Tester EEC-IV Scan Tool

I'm in Wellington, but I'd rather not pay probably $100 to retrieve fault codes. Lol. Thinking i might just have to whip the sump off and do a resistance check on the shift solenoids to establish which one - if any, is faulty

Well, after going mad wondering why there is no code 18 in any of the Mazda OBD1 lists, i finally found out that I'm not getting OBD1 codes 17, 15, and 18 from the engine computer but actually OBD2 code P0758 shift solenoid B What the heck Mazda. Use an OBD2 system with only an OBD1 plug?

HI did you get the issue fixed. I have a familiar sp20 with a/T light flashing got a diagnostic done and it says it is shift solenoid b. Is this the same issue as yours
