Default Hold light blinking

I have a 1993 Mazda Protege, DOHC with an automatic transmission. It has been in storage for about 4 years (I lived in China, with the car in storage), and when I put it in storage, it had a bad transmission, which now has been replaced. I had it replace with a 1993 Mazda Protege transmission from a junkyard car. Since I have received the car from the mechanic down the street, he told me I could drive it, but I'd have to put it in the S2 lower drive position. I essentially have no lower drives (ie the S or L positions), but the automatic transmission appears to work fine in S2 (he thought there may need to be some adjustment made to the shift consule). My mechanic was going on vacation, and told me I could drive it, it was fine, but the real issue is that I have a light blinking on the dashboard, the HOLD light, that the owners manual says could be an electrical problem with the transaxle ???? It says to consult a Mazda dealer as soon as possible. I have also noticed that the cruise control isn't working either. The car shifts great, runs fine, I'm happy from that perspective (it's 20 years old for crying out loud), but is this a serious problem? What could be wrong ? Sensor issue since I'm not running it in the D (drive) position ?
