Default Excess noise

When I start the car with the clutch pressed the car is quiet. When I let the clutch pedal up the car gets noisy and the rpms will lower and then go back to where they were. Any ideas?

Is it possible the tranny is low on gear lube? Is there synthetic lube available and would this help the noise?

sounds like it could be a bad throw-out bearing. is it amplified when it is colder outside?

The only bearings turning with the clutch out are the front input shaft bearing and input shaft pocket bearing. The throwout bearing should not be touching the pressure plate and the pilot bearing is 1 to 1 with the flywheel so the noise is an internal trans bearing.

If I pull the tranny can this be fixed? (I do my own repairs) or should I just take it to have it rebuilt? What does this usually cost?

I'm going to try the synthetic gear lube first.

Where are the drain/fill spots on the 5spd?

Default Update

The noise got worse last week so I pulled the tranny this weekend. The throw out bearing and the pilot bearing are very dry. The throw out bearing is noisy and spins real easy.

What is with the lower ball joints? I had a hell of a time getting them down. I took off the nut and bolt that goes front to back and it was hard getting the ball joint down.
