I think the first question may be "Has anyone heard of a Mazda Etude?" Apparently there was a Japan specific Etude in 1987 that was an upscale 323 with a longer and lower roofline. The name was also used in South Africa for the last version of the 323 and Protege before the Mazda 3 came out.
You may find someone with more helpful information if you provide more information about your Mazda. I would suspect that many people have similar cars with different names.
