Default ebrake not engaging all the way.

Looking for some advice on my ebrake. For a while now my ebrake has not been able to keep my 02 protege from rolling on an incline. I have replaced the rear brake pads and still not getting any better. Any suggestions?

I pretty sure that there is adjustment screw at the ebrake handle. You may have to remove the cover/console to get to it.

Indeed, there is an adjustment nut under the rubber boot at the handle on my '98 protege, but there could be other issues as well. Inside my drum brake there is an automatic adjuster that contains a link for the e-brake cable to pull on. This link was stuck. I had to take the part out, drench it with WD 40 or PB blaster, put it in a vice and tap it with a hammer to free it up. The part has to move easily.
Your '02 may have rear discs with an integrated e-brake. None the less each part has to move correctly for the e brake to be effective.

Take the rear wheels off and let someone operate the e-brake while you watch the cable at the drum. Is that piece moving easily with the cable? Can it be pushed further with a screw driver or pliers? If so it needs to be freed up and lubricated.

I hope that helps.

I just read your question again and you said you replaced the pads. So you have discs in the rear. Those rear disks have integrated drums with shoes. Look at those as well.

Thanks for the comments.

I called the dealer to price the drum shoes, and they said i didnt have drums integrated with the disc. the e-brake used the back disc brakes to work. All they recomended was lubing the e-brake cable and maybe adjusting it in the console. i did both and it works great!

Finally something easily fixed on this car!
