Default The dreaded P0171, with a twist

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have a '99 Protege LX 1.6L, and currently have had the check engine light on, a few times, with the P0171 ODBII readout every time.

In the first case, the cause was a cracked air intake hose, which I replaced, and the light went away.

A few months later, the light came back on, and I read on numerous sites about cleaning the MAF sensor. Took it apart, it was filthy, cleaned it up, and the light went away (again.)

A few weeks later, on it comes (again), and am not sure where to go from here. I usually do my own work, and don't want to risk spending the money on a brand new MAF, since they're fairly easy to replace yourself, if that will not remedy the issue.

Any thoughts, insights or previous experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just for anyone who experiences a similar issue, sometimes just a cleaning of the MAF sensor does not always remedy the P0171 problem.

I bit the bullet and bought a new MAF ($80 CAD, Genuine Mazda Part), and, so far, the car is running much smoother, and no more CEL.
