Exclamation Is it the Clutch or the Transmission?

After driving my '94 Protege(stick shift) today for about a half hour i stopped at a red light. When I got ready to go again I couldn't shift into 1st...finally after kind of forcing it into gear a bit I was able to go and make it back home. Now, with the clutch pedal pressed in, when it's in any gear the car idles rough, you can hear clicks and noises, and the car kind of surges a bit as if it wants to move. It is also still intermittently hard to get into 1st & 2nd gear while driving. The surging & clicking noises don't happen when it's in neutral with the clutch pressed or released.
Does this sound like a clutch going out or the transmission? Thanks for any direction that anyone can give.
