The cheapest scanner by far is to have the codes scanned for you by an auto parts store that does them for free. Check around in your area with some of the bigger ones and see if they will perform this service. Code format should be the letter P followed by 4 numerical digits ( ie P1170 ). Once you have that little code number then the fun begins trying to figure out what it means and why it was set in the first place.
