Default Broke Transmission Oil Pump

In the middle of my first engine swap…(biting nails). 2002 P5. Well, I stupidly bolted the torque converter to the flex plate instead of putting it inside the transmission first, and I torqued the bell housing bolts down, and there was a lot of resistance. Here’s where it’s confusing… I was using two tires and a joist to help line up the trans and the engine. I heard a loud pop during the mating. Under the engine block are two fork like pieces and they were pulling on the outside of the tire. (Basically using them as a skid) The sound did seem like the tire and the fork was in a bind and it finally released pressure. Think when a tire shop airs up a tire quickly. I’ve also read that this could have been me “popping” the oil pump.

Is there any way of knowing whether or not I broke the transmission oil pump before I put all of this back together?I have a little bit of play in and out on the inner Shaft.

Any help would mean so much!

Wow..... I feel for you.

You got me on not having an answer for you???
Mostly because how you did it what happened and the sound? If I had to only speculate, I think you broke something other than the pump. But I would reverse what you did all the way back to almost the start.

The converter seems to spin freely. And two people have said it’s likely fine; but wouldn’t mind gathering more info!

Well if it matters, I am ASE for a long long long time? Your basic DIY method of service and securing is not the better ones, but it still would be very difficult to just break the pump. If I were to inspect the transmission housing carefully I may find a fracture? Thats is just a "GUESS"" based on very limited information, no pictures and not being present to physically inspect the transmission.,

This sounds like good answer. If there is a crack in the housing is the thing toast?

Not necessarily . How about find the problem maybe fracture then post back. If it is the transmission definitely pictures. I reinforce many OEM transmission to handle higher load placed by increased power output of the engine. So I may have some input into a fix ?

So I’m looking at replacing the transmission now. I’m seeing transmissions that are pre and post built 03/02. Are all automatic transmissions compatible with these cars? I have the sport shift; which isn’t important to me.

Anyone on this? I pulled an 02 sedan to put in my late built P5 with sport mode. Crossing my fingers.
