Alternator burning up
my son tried to hotwire his 1997 mazda after he lost keys in the river and now the alternator keeps burning up. can this be the PCM if so where is it located. Cannot figure this out.
I would first check your son's "crime scene" for shorts.
Also: the battery or battery cable may be bad.
And I found this info: He even admits to buying the duralast alt from AZ (AutoZone) which WILL go bad more often then any other reman unit. I know I have been an auto technician nearly half my life and every time the shop gets a duralast they go bad in only a few months and if we get the remans from O'Reilly AutoParts they rarely if EVER go bad. That is why I asked the question, and guess what that seems to be (At least part of) the problem!
I do not have alternator issues on my car...have had the same original alternator on it from day one. I also realize that there are only 2 manufacturers for car batteries and they are all NEARLY the same. Quality may be different by brand or style but they are all made by the same 2 companies.
