Question '99 Stick

1999 Mazda Protege, manual, 1.6L - new clutch, new-ish tires, needs battery and ignition coil, cylinder heads recently reworked. Prior to parking, did 100+ mile road trip up and down I95 with no issues.

Considering buying this - but the current owner says "needs short block replaced"
When pressed for details, he says the piston rings need replacing
Says the engine is not cracked, never (with emphasis) overheated, and ran great prior to being parked 6 months ago. It does "burn oil" he says - which makes me wonder a bit.

Would this be worth purchasing?

How much are they asking?

Get a pre purchased inspection done by your mechanic, including a compression test, leak down test & cooling system pressure test.
