97 protege pulley noise
I have a 97 mazda protege, with a 1.5 DOHC. I just completed an engine change out 2 weeks ago, bought a JDM engine. I have a constant sqeak ( that just started)around the Crankshaft pully. I have replaced both belts and double checked the tightness. It does not sqeak at idle and when you excelerate the squeak stays the same it does not get louder.
I had to remove the crankshaft pully in order to install the crankshaft sensor plate from my old engine onto the new one. Everything went back on just fine.
Could the harmonic balancer be worn and squeaking?
let me know what ya'll think.....

have you checked to make sure your pullies arnt full of rubber from old belts? I had the same problem and thats what instantly fixed it. Also be sure when you tighten your belts they need to be pretty tight. The guy at the mazda dealership told me no more than 1/4 inch of play in the belt. Seems like that would tear the bearings out but it worked great for me with no problems.
Pullies are clear no rubber at all. I will tighten the belt some and see if that helps. What about the water pump? If the Imported engine I put in has sat for a while could the bearings be dry and they are now squeaking?
thanks for the replies...they are a big help.....I'll get back to you

Deflection for the water pump/crank/generator pulley belt should be 6mm-7.5mm.
Deflection for power steering/crank/ac pulley should be 9-10mm
Should be checked when the engine is stone cold.
No less AND NO MORE!!!! Too tight is worse than too loose on Mazdas.
Also check the alignment of the pulleys. Use only goodyear gatorback belts. Cheap belts will bite you in the *** on these cars.

I'll do the belts. How do you set the exact deflection? Not sure how to do that.
Also, what about the water pump, having sat for some time? Should I go ahead and change it?
How do you double check pully alignment?

well how do the bearings in the pullies feel? Check those and also how many miles are on that jdm motor? If I was you I would go ahead and change the water pump though since it has been sitting. And why you do that throw a new timing belt on also, dont need that breaking. AlsoI've always checked my belt tightness after they have had time to warm up, which they will expand slightlywhen heated.
